It was not too long ago that Danny Rohl turned down the chance to become the Rangers' manager. So, one has to wonder what changed over the last few days that he was quickly appointed, after it became clear that Kevin Muscat was not interested in the role either. Whatever it was, Celtic fans have been left laughing again.
It would be safe to say that the majority of Rangers fans did not want Rohl as their new manager. At first, they had convinced themselves that Steven Gerrard would come in and take them to the top.
When Gerrard rejected the job, they did the same with Muscat. But neither move ended up happening despite talks being held.
And ultimately, the Rangers ended up going back for Rohl. This time around, they have been successful, bringing in the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.
'Resign immediately' - Rangers and Celtic fans react to Danny Rohl announcement
The reaction of the two sets of fans to the news of Rohl's being announced as the new Rangers manager was very different. One Ibrox supporter wrote: "Stewart and Thelwell must resign immediately."
On the other other hand, it looks like a move that Celtic fans are enjoying. One wrote: "Amazing they’ve only went and appointed the German Russell Martin."
Well, one must say that it would be a mistake to rule out a manager even before they have gotten a chance to show what they are capable of in Scottish football. Yes, Rohl is not a big name but he could be prove to be a decent appointment. Celtic must be wary before reaching any conclusions about him.
He has had coaching roles with Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Southampton and the Germany national team. His spell at Sheffield Wednesday exceeded all expectations as well. Of course, one has to wonder if he has the experience required to deal with the situation at Ibrox. Much more experienced managers than him have failed already.
On the other hand, they have plenty of problems of their own at the moment. Brendan Rodgers is struggling to get a tune out of this team at the moment. The 'Honda Civic' comment will not help things either and one has to wonder if there is a possibility that the club and the manager could decide to part ways soon.
Time shall tell. For now, the focus has to be on somehow getting some positive results over the next couple of months and not letting the gap with Hearts widen further. After that, the board must make some quality signings in the January transfer window, not bring in a bunch of projects, hoping that one or two work out and can be moved on for big fees in the future.
