Over the past 24 hours, Celtic's transfer business, or at least the speculation surrounding it, has picked up pace suddenly. They have been linked with a long list of players, mostly wingers and left-backs, two positions where the Hoops need to strengthen. And one such player is headed for the Serie A next season.
It was a major blow for Italian football when Sassuolo dropped down to Serie B. But after just one season in the second division, they have earned promotion back to the top flight.
One player who played his part in this triumph was Josh Doig. He played 29 times in the Serie B last season, scoring and assisting once each, as Sassuolo gained promotion. But will he remain with the club to play in the Serie A again?
As reported by Ben Jacobs, Celtic are interested in Josh Doig. Watford looked at the left-back in the past as well.
Reliable source confirms Celtic interest in Serie A player
Unless it is Sassuolo who are trying to find Doig a new home, it would be a confusing move on the part of the Scottish international to end up at Celtic. The Hoops have already announced the arrival of Kieran Tierney, who is going to be the starter at left-back.
So, the best Doig can hope for is the role of a backup option to Tierney. Is that the role he wants to play at this point in his career, at 23 years of age? It feels unlikely. But never say never in football.
This is not the first time that Celtic have shown interest in Doig. They wanted him back in his Hibernian days. He would end up joining Hellas Verona though, before joining Sassuolo. Unfortunately, he did not enjoy the meteoric rise in Serie A that Aaron Hickey did.
