Celtic exceeded all expectations away at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich. They were seconds away from winning the game and taking the tie into extra-time in the Bavarian giants' own backyard. That would have gone down as one of the most famous nights in the Scottish club's history but unfortunately, a last-gasp goal from Alphonso Davies prevented it from happening.

It was a great performance nonetheless and one which has earned Celtic plenty of praise. But as the dust settles, it is important to look at how things unfolded in Munich and how it could have gone better.

One brilliant decision that Brendan Rodgers made on the night was starting Jeffrey Schlupp. Greg Taylor had struggled in the first leg at Parkhead and was criticised for allowing Michael Olise too much time and space for the opener.

Still, starting Schlupp was a brave call from Rodgers. If it had not worked out, the manager would have been heavily criticised. So, what are the factors that led to that decision?

Reason Celtic starter was dropped against Bayern Munich

As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Troy Deeney said on talkSPORT:

"I think Jeff’s got the pace and the know-how as well.

“We spoke about it already, he’s won the Premier League, obviously, and played in the Champions League as well with Leicester.

“He’s had a solid career at Crystal Palace as well so you would say he’s used to playing at that left-back position.

“He probably knows Olise a lot better as well having played with him at Crystal Palace, so a lot of factors as to why he would have started in this game."

Schlupp put in a superb display. First, he kept his former Crystal Palace teammate, Olise, quiet. Not an easy task for even the best full-backs in the length. Then, he dealt with Leroy Sane.

One has to wonder if that performance has solidified Schlupp as a starter for Celtic. At the same time, he was immense and then some against Bayern Munich and deserves all the credit in the world. On the other hand, Taylor's future at the club is in doubt.

So, going forward with Schlupp as the starting left-back might not be the worst idea in the world. Especially since his Crystal Palace contract runs out in the summer.
