After weeks of underperformance and being taken off at half-time against St Johnstone, it was expected that Nicolas Kuhn was going to be dropped from the starting XI against Kilmarnock. One decision that a lot of Celtic fans did not see coming though was Jota being left on the bench as well, with Brendan Rodgers opting for a front trio of Adam Idah, Daizen Maeda and James Forrest.

While Kuhn has struggled in recent weeks, Jota has actually done a pretty good job since coming in in the winter from Rennes, only 18 months after his departure. So, the decision to drop the Portuguese winger was somewhat unexpected.

At the end of the day, Celtic won the game. Reo Hatate scored a brace while Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maeda and Anthony Ralston were on the scoresheet as well.

Rodgers ended up explaining his selection decisions as well. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he said:

"No, it’s more of, more of a collective. But I also think if you look at the performance we had when we beat Kilmarnock 5-0 last season, we’ve probably only got one player who is not in the team that played that.

“So it’s also part to do with the system and how they they play is very much man to man. So you need players that can come on the inside, roll inside and deal with that situation.

“Obviously, Adam gives us that real reference at the top end of the field that we have to go through or go over to to him.

“Listen, the players that drop out have been quality players for us throughout the season. But, what we need is to bring a different energy and desire to the game."

Real reason Jota was unexpectedly dropped by Celtic boss vs Kilmarnock this weekend

The good news is that Jota did not spend the entire game sitting on the bench. He was brought on on the hour mark against Kilmarnock.

Overall, Jota should be pretty happy with how things have gone for him since his return to Celtic Park in the winter. He has gotten consistent playing time for the Hoops and has been able to contribute to the side with both goals and assists.

That being said, it is also important to remember how little football he has played over the last couple of seasons. Thus, one would imagine that Jota needs a bit more time to find his rhythm and show his best.

The next pre-season should do him well. Jota has been pretty good since his return but the expectation is that he will be even better by the time the 25/26 season rolls around. His being dropped from the starting XI for one game is not a matter of concern.
