It would be safe to say that at the start of this season, absolutely nobody would have expected Barry Ferguson to finish it as the Rangers' manager. But that is how things have turned out. Philippe Clement struggled to get results throughout the campaign, putting Celtic on the verge of another treble. And ultimately, it came to a point where the Ibrox board needed to make a decision.
Despite handing Clement a contract just earlier in the season, he was handed the exit door. Seemingly, it was done so without having a long-term successor either, as Ferguson was brought in as interim head coach until the end of the campaign.
Admittedly, Ferguson has done a better job than anybody could have expected. He has won against Celtic at Parkhead, after almost five years, and taken the Rangers past Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in the Europa League.
But Chris Sutton believes that Ferguson has enough to be the next full-time Rangers manager, even if he ends up guiding them to the Europa League. As reported by The Scottish Sun, the former Celtic striker said:
"He can't be Rangers manager.
"Because, I think he's a bit of a chest beater as a manager, that's the way he seems to me.
"It's always Rangers are really high after a victory and then a real low (after a defeat).
"I think the club needs stability and I don't think he has that experience.
"He's gone in and in the short-term, if he wins the Europa League, that would be enormous but I still don't think they should give him the job full-time.
"They should go with someone more experienced."
Celtic hero Chris Sutton gives Rangers fans a reality check about Barry Ferguson
Let's see what the future holds for Ferguson. If he is somehow about to lead this Rangers team to Europa League glory, one would imagine that he would be handed the Ibrox job on a permanent basis. There is no way he would not be.
That does not mean that it would not be a bad appointment. We have already seen a number of managers come in at Ibrox and do well early on, only for it to fall apart some months later. Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Mick Beale, Philippe Clement, it happened with them all.
Overall, Rangers' form has not been great, even after the arrival of Ferguson. Yes, they have gotten some big results. But in total, they have only won four out of the nine matches he has been in charge.
