It would be an understatement to say that the Rangers are nowhere near Celtic at the moment. The Hoops are closing in on their sixth treble in nine seasons and 13th Premiership in 14 years. On the other hand, the Ibrox club are set to finish without a trophy. That is the gap that exists and they are hoping will be filled when the San Francisco 49ers takeover goes through.

One thing that the Rangers are expected to do in the summer is bring in a new manager. Barry Ferguson has done a decent job since being made interim head coach but it is hard to imagine that he will get the role permanently.

Jose Mourinho is someone who has been linked with the Ibrox job, even though he is at Fenerbahce. There have been rumours that the Portuguese manager might be interested. It remains to be seen how accurate those suggestions are.

On the other hand, Ally McCoist appears to believe that the Celtic job would appeal to Mourinho. As reported by Football Insider, the Rangers legend said on talkSPORT:

"Do you know what, I think that kind of job really appeals to him.

“Because he’s backing them up, he’s right in the forefront of football, Europe every year."

It is safe to say that most Celtic fans would want things to continue as they are, with Brendan Rodgers as manager. He has spoken about wanting to at least see out his contract with the Hoops, which runs until the summer of 2026.

That being said, Mourinho is a proven winner. Even in his roles at AS Roma and Fenerbahce, he has done a pretty good job. So, if the Rangers were able to appoint him, that would definitely catch Celtic's attendance and it should.

One can only hope that Celtic are ready to go toe-to-toe, whatever investment is made by the Rangers moving forward. The Hoops are significantly ahead right now and they should not allow that gap to decrease, even if comfortably ahead.
