It would be safe to say that there is a lot of negativity around Celtic Park, coming out of the summer transfer window. It might very well have been the worst in the club's history. And that's not just because of the signings they made or the players they saw leave. Even more concerning was the lack of ambition and urgency that was shown by the Hoops, even when key players left.
Nicolas Kuhn left several weeks ago but was not replaced before the UEFA Champions League qualifiers were already lost. On the other hand, Adam Idah was allowed to depart on deadline day but a replacement was not brought in, as the attempt to sign Kasper Dolberg collapsed after negotiations dragged on and Ajax swooped in with a late move. Ultimately, the club settled by signing Kelechi Iheanacho as a free agent.
This simply is not good enough for a club of this magnitude. Supporters groups, fan media and eveybody else reunited to send an open letter in the aftermath of the summer transfer window.
The club put out an official statement in reply yesterday. And it was not enough to satisfy the majority of the support.
'Total disrespect' - Celtic fans react to board's statement
One Celtic fan wrote regarding the statement: "Unbelievable statement, total disrespect for the supporters in its wording and timing."
Another said: "Too many Celtic icons or big names who support Celtic either staying quiet or making excuses in case it affects the privileges!"
Another supporter added: "Fails to adequately address any concern. FFP mention is a fallacy."
It remains to be seen how things go from here. Of course, there have been quite a few failures at Celtic over the years. But at no point has it gotten to this point where the fans seem to have completely turned on the board. It remains to be seen if this leads to any kind of substantial change at the top level or not.
The focus will soon return to the football on the pitch. But if results don't improve, expect the noise to only grow from here. And that is not something that the Celtic board will want, that is for sure.
