Man Utd hero makes blunt Brendan Rodgers claim after Celtic loss
Celtic fans would have been left very disappointed by how things turned out for their team against Borussia Dortmund. Up until this point, the Hoops were enjoying a historic campaign. They had won all nine of their games and are yet to concede a goal in the Premiership. On top of everything else, they had won their Champions League opener against Slovan Bratislava by a 5-1 scoreline. A rare sight in Europe for a Scottish team.
Yet, all the optimism around the club seems to have evaporated after the loss against Borussia Dortmund. It feels like they are back to square one and questions have been raised about how much progress has actually been made.
In the aftermath of the result, Brendan Rodgers' approach has been questioned. Celtic tried to go toe-to-toe with Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
That approach has worked sometimes at home. But in away games, Celtic have rarely done well in the Champions League. Last season, they lost 6-0 to Atletico Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano. 5-1 against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu in the 22/23 campaign.
Man Utd hero makes blunt Brendan Rodgers claim after Celtic loss
Owen Hargreaves won the Champions League with both Manchester United and Bayern Munich. He knows what it takes to succeed at this level. And he posed a fair question to Rodgers after the game. As reported by Glasgow World, he said to TNT Sports:
"If you make mistakes like that, you are going to get punished. The question (to Brendan Rodgers) is fair; are you going to change anything? When you are playing top teams they can hurt you, but there is nothing wrong with having a different look from the opposition."
To be honest, there needs to be a change to this approach. It is very clear that Celtic cannot go toe-to-toe with world-class teams like Borussia Dortmund.
Just look at underdog teams from previous seasons who have managed to make it to the next round of the competition. It is mostly a result of them sitting back, defending well and winning close games. If you want to go a bit back in time, look at how Celtic managed to get the better of a Barcelona team with the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and more. 11% possession and about 800 passes less than the opposition. It is just the win that we remember though.
