it is no secret that John McGinn grew up supporting Celtic. The Aston Villa captain will have nothing but victory in his sights though, when the two teams face each other in the Champions League. Brendan Rodgers' side will be making the trip down to England in early 2025. It is not a contest that we have seen often over the decades.

Of course, Celtic fans will remember how the club were close to signing McGinn during Brendan Rodgers' first stint as manager at Parkhead. But Aston Villa managed to secure his signature after the Hoops let negotiations drag on for too long.

In hindsight, Celtic missed out on a fantastic player. McGinn has established himself as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League and is the current Aston Villa captain.

Yet, McGinn seems to be of the belief that his family and friends will be hoping for a Celtic win when the Hoops travel to Villa Park. As reported by the Daily Record, the Scottish international said:

"Was I hoping to get Celtic? Not really! Family and friends, they always want to come and see the biggest of games. But when it was Celtic, the phone was going off the hook. I thought about it and I thought, nah, I'd have rather somebody else because nobody would want to come and see Monaco at home!

"“I'm sure they'll be wanting Celtic to win. But it's something I've dealt with in the past with St Mirren and Hibs. I've got a job to do for Villa and I'm sure it'll be an exciting game for everyone."

Of course, one would not expect the opposition to have any effect on McGinn. He is a top professional who knows that he has a job to do for Aston Villa, no matter who he grew up supporting.

The Aston Villa fixture is expected to be one of the tougher ones for Celtic in the new format Champions League this season. There are some other games though, which one would expect them to win, especially at home.

The Hoops have made a flying start to the season and hopefully, they can continue building on that. They already look much better than they did last season and hopefully, we will see that improvement at the Champions League level as well.
