One of the key targets for Celtic this summer has to be building a squad that can compete in the Champions League and show meaningful progress in Europe. The Hoops did win a game in the competition last season, after many years, but they cannot be satisfied with one-off results here and there.

Of course, nobody expects Celtic to be competing for the Champions League. That simply is not possible in the modern game. But getting into the knockout stages is a realistic target and many underdog teams have proven that in recent years.

FC Copenhagen, for example, made it to the last 16 despite being in the same group as Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Galatasaray. A former Celtic player was a key part of their success - Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Elyounoussi ended up having a fantastic season. He had 22 goal contributions overall and scored against the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Galatasaray. The Norwegian international was linked with a return to Celtic last summer. Should the Hoops make an attempt to sign him this time around?

Celtic rarely sign players in the middle of their prime these days. But in the case of Elyounoussi, a release clause makes the move worth considering.

As reported by Tipsbladet, Elyounoussi has a buyout clause in his contract. The figure is set at €3 million.

That is more than a fair transfer fee for someone like Elyounoussi. He has proven that he can guide a team to the Champions League knockout stages, played regular Premier League football in the recent past and is a regular at the international level for Norway.

If that was not enough, he has already proven himself in Scottish football during his two seasons on loan at Parkhead. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Elyounoussi scored 24 goals and provided 14 assists in 67 appearances and 4000 minutes of action for Celtic.
