Celtic are on the verge of completing potentially their most expensive transfer ever. A £9.5 million transfer package is believed to have been agreed with Norwich City to sign Adam Idah on a permanent basis. While many are unsure about spending that kind of a figure on someone who might end up being a backup option to Kyogo, nobody can question the ambition shown.
It looks like there are other high-profile names on Celtic's radar as well. One of them is a 20-year-old Belgian midfielder currently playing in the Bundesliga.
As reported by FootballTransfers, Celtic have made FC Augsburg's Arne Engels one of their top transfer targets this summer. Brendan Rodgers is keen to add further strength to his midfield.
It could take a transfer fee north of €10 million to sign Engels this summer. It remains to be seen if Celtic end up making an offer of that magnitude for the Belgian midfielder, especially after the Idah deal.
Celtic make €10m Belgian midfielder their top transfer target
Engels is a versatile player, capable of playing all over midfield. Of course, that would be an asset to any club.
Engels has a decent bit of experience under his belt as well despite being 20. He has made 50 appearances in the Bundesliga already. The midfielder was a regular contributor for FC Augsburg last season. He has also represented Belgium at a number of youth international levels.
One also has to wonder whether Celtic's rumoured interest in Engels is a hint regarding the future of Matt O'Riley. The Danish midfielder has been linked with some of Europe's biggest clubs this summer and the Hoops are believed to have received multiple transfer offers already.
If O'Riley were to leave, fans would expect the club to make a significant investment in order to replace him. Perhaps they are viewing Engels as someone with the potential to do that.
