Cameron Carter-Vickers status confirmed for Celtic vs Borussia Dortmund
Celtic are set to face their toughest test of the season this midweek when they travel to Signal Iduna Park to take on Borussia Dortmund. Not only are the opposition last season's Champions League finalists, but their home crowd atmosphere is also the stuff of legend. The Hoops will be facing not just eleven players but also their twelfth man, the iconic Yellow Wall.
If the odds were not already stacked against them, Celtic will also have to face Borussia Dortmund without one of their best players. Yes, Cameron Carter-Vickers has been declared unavailable for the game in Germany.
Carter-Vickers had not featured in recent games but still, many held on to the hope that he was been being protected for the match against Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately, the American international has not recovered in time from a toe injury and has not made the trip to Germany as a result.
Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers, confirmed the news to the media. As reported by STV News, the Northern Irishman said:
"Cam is not available. We’ll see what he’s like going into next weekend, but he’s not here for this one.
"Clearly he’s a top-class player for us and he’s missed a little bit of Champions League football I think in his time.
“Five of the 12 games the club has played he has unfortunately not been able to play in.
“But we have other players. It’s always an opportunity for somebody else to come in and hopefully we can get Cam back sooner rather than later.
“But we can’t over-think it. We will rely on the collective. There’s not one player that brings our results and how we have been this season. Of course he’s a very important player, Cam, but for us to get a result it will be about the collective."
Cameron Carter-Vickers fitness status confirmed for Celtic v Borussia Dortmund
It goes without saying that Carter-Vickers will be a big miss for the game against Borussia Dortmund. He is Celtic's best defender and a leader at the back. Without him, the Hoops do not look as organised of a backline.
In Carter-Vickers' place, Auston Trusty is expected to step in. The American international was signed in the summer from Sheffield United. On deadline day to be exact.
The sample size is pretty small but so far, it has been a mixed bag for Trusty in a Celtic jersey. He struggled in the Scottish League Cup against Falkirk, Championship opposition, and conceded two goals. But then, the defence looked much better at the weekend in a 6-0 win over St Johnstone away in Perth in the Premiership.
