The recent record of big-name players leaving Celtic is not a great one. Just look at how things have turned out for Odsonne Edouard in the Premier League. Jota failed at Al-Ittihad and Rennes before deciding to make a Parkhead return. And now, it looks like Kyogo's career is headed on a downward trajectory.
Kyogo decided to leave Celtic in the middle of the season, passing on the chance to play in the Champions League knockout phase, to join Rennes. Just a few months on and it looks like the French club might already be looking to replace him.
Kyogo is clearly not a starter for Rennes despite his £10 million transfer move in late January. In fact, he has often been left on the bench as an unused substitute.
There is more bad news for the Japanese international. As reported by the Daily Record, reports in France are suggesting that a "successor" has already been lined up for Kyogo at Rennes and L'Equipe report that Udinese striker Florian Thauvin has been made a contract offer with his deal in Serie A set to expire in the summer.
Offer made as Kyogo's nightmare worsens after leaving Celtic
It is believed that the desire to play at the next World Cup for Japan was a driving factor behind Kyogo leaving Celtic for Rennes in the winter. But chances of him being picked would be slim to none if he continues to struggle for minutes at the Ligue 1 side.
To be fair to Kyogo, he was left out of the last World Cup squad for Japan, despite brilliant goalscoring form at Celtic. So, one can understand why he felt that a move to a top five European league was important.
That being said, it has clearly not worked out for him. Do not be surprised if Kyogo ends up leaving Rennes in the summer transfer window.
