Over the last couple of days, it has looked like Celtic have decided to move forward with their interest in Wilfried Nancy. Since Brendan Rodgers quit a couple of weeks back, the Hoops have been linked with a variety of names. But a large number of those seem to be unavailable at the moment or uninterested in a move to Parkhead.
That has left them with very few options to choose from. Of course, sticking with Martin O'Neill as interim boss until the end of the season and then going for a permanent manager, when more are available, could be a smart play. Especially as the results have improved lately.
But it appears that Celtic might be keen to make an appointment before the January transfer window. So, it looked like Nancy was on his way to Parkhead. There had even been some rumours yesterday that he had been given permission by Columbus Crew to speak to the Hoops directly. The situation appears to have taken an unexpected turn though.
As reported by Tom Bogert, there is still no official contact between Celtic and Columbus Crew. Nancy is under contract and the MLS club would need to authorise anything and work out compensation if the manager is to leave.
'No official contact' - Wilfried Nancy to Celtic takes U-turn
It remains to be seen how things will play out for Nancy over the coming days. Just when it had looked like a move to Celtic was getting close, the situation has taken a turn.
Of course, that does not mean that the situation won't change. Or if it already has not. As Bogert mentioned, this does not mean that it can't or won't happen, just that it hasn't yet.
The appointment of Nancy would leave a large section of Celtic fans disappointed. One has to wonder if the club are having second thoughts.
