Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon believes his old club have been playing with 'no thought' amid their home defeat to Rangers on Sunday. The Bhoys were beaten for the second time in as many weeks by their biggest rivals, and they once again produced a flat performance.
The Bhoys remain top of the Scottish Premiership by two points, but there is growing concern over how they are playing and their lack of response when things start to go against them.
The fallout has been pretty severe. O'Neill is being backed by the club amid calls from some for him to be sacked, and the veteran boss has himself hinted that he could walk away from his post if he cannot find the solutions to the problems his side are facing.
It doesn't feel as though anyone knows how to fix the situation, and Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers has called for a more structured way of playing.
He said after the Old Firm defeat: “It’s hard to put your finger on one thing. Overall, we played a bit too random. I think that’s what we need to get back to over this international break, getting a script and sticking to it.”
He added: “The last two games have been pressure games and that’s when I think as players you kind of rely on having something to fall back on.
“At the moment, we just haven’t had the time to get that and that’s something as players we can do better in for sure, not taking away from that. It’s something we need to look at and improve on.”
Before those comments were made, Lennon discussed Celtic's performance on Sky Sports, and he had a similar belief, claiming the Bhoys played with 'no thought', and not for the first time.
“We can’t argue with anything here. Kris (Boyd) called it and the boys in commentary called it, Rangers were the far superior team" Lennon told Sky Sports.
“Not just in physical attributes and running, but they played all the football. “I thought Celtic were a lot better than they had been in the first half, without being brilliant. Second half was totally disjointed, totally outplayed, outworked – which is something that is the worst thing that you can label a team.
“No quality, no thought. Hope rather than expectation with the way they’re playing. Absolutely battered today.” Celtic now have just under three weeks to mull over the situation.
