Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson has confirmed that the club will back Martin O'Neill despite a disappointing run of results. The Bhoys have lost three straight games, including two Old Firm fixtures, and those three games also come a few weeks after a Champions League collapse that saw the Bhoys blow a four-goal lead to drop into the Europa League.
The Hoops have developed a nasty habit of blowing up in big games, and in the last two Rangers derbies, they have failed to turn up at all, putting on flat displays that rightly enraged supporters.
With a lack of intensity and clear systematic issues, particularly in the midfield, but there are also major personnel issues that have nothing to do with O'Neill.
The veteran boss has hinted he could walk away if he examines the situation during this extended international break and decides he cannot fix the situation.
That is a concern for supporters, especially given the lack of confidence they have in the club to properly replace O'Neill.
But what has become clear is that O'Neill will not be sacked, with Celtic keeping trust, which only seems fair after he rescued them last season and dragged a struggling team to a league and cup double.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson confirmed: "Reaching the league phase of the Champions League is an objective for us all, and we are sorry not to have achieved it.
“On top of that, the losses in the last week have been painful for us all. We will now come together and support Martin and the players, as we focus our efforts on achieving success domestically and in the Europa League.”
O'Neill is currently under contract for the rest of the season, while there is also the option of a further season if both parties agree upon it. But judging by O'Neill's comments this season, it is unlikely he will remain at the club beyond the end of the season, assuming he stays until then.
