As the summer transfer window picks up pace, rumours of bids and approaches are currently circulating widely around Celtic. They cover both players who may arrive and others who could be on their way out. Inevitably, there may be some surprises both in and out, but some exits seem long overdue.
In the case of Gustaf Lagerbielke, that wait could be about to end. Signed in the summer of 2023 from IF Elfsborg for €3.4 million, he looked to be an exciting prospect to fill a gap at centre-back. But after a promising start, that hope soon faded away.
Lagerbielke has only made ten appearances for the club, six in the starting lineup. He does have a highlight of a winning goal against Feyenoord in the Champions League.
Coming off the bench, he headed home a late winner to secure a 2-1 home win. However, with limited other opportunities, it became clear he was no longer a real contender for a role in Brendan Rodgers' plans.
'Negotiations ongoing' - Fabrizio Romano confirms Celtic bid news
Lagerbielke has been close to a move away a few times. At one point, other injuries in the squad meant he was blocked from leaving to provide further cover. He did spend last season on loan at Dutch side Twente FC and played well. That has sparked more interest from other clubs.
Now Fabrizio Romano is indicating that SC Braga have made a bid of €2m for the player. Notably, he also mentions that negotiations are ongoing and the player is keen. Those could be critical if the move is to go through.

A deal at that figure represents a loss for Celtic, perhaps larger than they would be prepared to accept. Even if a move away is long overdue, you’d expect the club to hold out for more. And to include some future add-ons and a sell-on clause.
With news of bids being made by Celtic to sign another centre-back, Veljko Milosavljevic, and talk of an offer for Maik Nawrocki also being considered, it could be all change at the back for the club. The position definitely needs a review and with question marks over Auston Trusty and Liam Scales over who partners Cameron Carter-Vickers, some movement is needed.
Is this the time for Lagerbielke to leave? The answer is surely yes. As always the club will want to secure a good fee and deal. But there is also the point that just clearing the decks and moving on is sensible. Let’s see how this latest saga progresses.
