It is pretty obvious from what has been reported over the past few days in the media that Wilfried Nancy has emerged as the frontrunner to get the vacant Celtic job. But that does not mean that everybody is convinced that he is the right fit for the role. Far from it. In fact, it has completely divided the opinion of the fanbase.
There are many who are willing to give Nancy a chance, based on his success in the MLS. A lot of that might be down to the similarities with Ange Postecoglou and the success that the Australian had enjoyed at Celtic before this.
But on the other hand, one cannot overlook the fact that Nancy does not have nearly as expansive a CV of success as Postecoglou had when he arrived at Celtic. And there are other reasons why the fans should be worried about this potential appointment as well.
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Matt of the 4TheCrew podcast however, speaking to Off the Underside, raised doubts about Nancy's suitability for the Celtic job as he said:
"If he does get to Celtic, he’s done it within five years of becoming a coach.
“Especially this season, I think it’s not the greatest situation for him, because of where Celtic is right now. Hearts being seven points clear.
“He might easily come in and say ‘I’m not going to change a whole lot this year, I’m going to do what we need to do to win, and then once the off-season comes in, I’m going to put in my own ideas.’
“That’s probably what he should do, I don’t know if that’s what he will do. The way that he sets up his team, it takes time.
“And it doesn’t feel like, right now, Celtic has time, if they want to win another title. So I don’t even know if you’ll see the real way of Nancy’s philosophy until the following season."
MLS expert shares worrying reason Wilfried Nancy might struggle at Celtic
It looks like Nancy has his own style of football. But it takes time for something like that to be implemented.
The issue is, he does not have a pre-season to work with the team. And at this point in time, they find themselves chasing Hearts in the title race.
So, Celtic cannot afford to stumble and drop points in the title race. So, one has to question the thought process behind bringing in someone like Nancy at this point. We get that a new manager is brought in with a long-term view in mind.
That being said, it does not take long for the pressure to mount in Glasgow. Just look at Russell Martin, who lasted only 123 days in the Ibrox job. If Nancy does not produce results off the bat, he might not get until next season to show 'the real way' of his philosophy.
The patience at Celtic Park could run even thinner than that. Firstly, it is because a large portion of the fanbase does not believe bringing in Nancy would be the right move. Secondly, there is the dissatisfaction with how the club has been run by the board in the background, which means all of their decisions are under the microscope, including and especially their appointment of a new manager.
