Celtic's 3-1 win over RB Leipzig must have come as a surprise to many across Europe. Not many would have expected the Hoops to not only get the better of top Bundesliga opposition but also in a comfortable fashion. Yes, Brendan Rodgers' side did go a goal down but once Nicolas Kuhn brought them level, the momentum swung and ultimately, it turned out to be a one-sided game.

The result should give Celtic a lot of confidence about their ability to compete with high-profile opposition, especially at home. Also, it puts them in a terrific position to make it past the League Phase of the competition.

After four games, Celtic have seven points. That means that they are higher on the Champions League points table than teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

That is remarkable. And this is one way that the new format makes it possible for teams like Celtic to advance in the competition. Of course, the luck of the draw was on their side this time around.

Micah Richards makes 'brilliant' claim about Celtic

While looking over the Champions League table for CBS Sports, when Jamie Carragher asked Micah Richards whether he was happy with Celtic, the former Manchester City defender replied:

"Celtic, yes! That’s why we like the new format. Celtic, absolutely brilliant."

It remains to be seen whether Celtic can make it through to the next phase of the Champions League. On paper, they still have three winnable games and an away trip to England to face Aston Villa. Of course, as we all know, absolutely nothing should be taken for granted at this level of football.

One could argue that Celtic have already exceeded all expectations. The draw away in Bergamo against Atalanta was brilliant. To follow that up with a win vs RB Leipzig, who are competing for the Bundesliga, was sensational.
