It took a 92nd-minute penalty for the Rangers to salvage a point against Dundee FC. It was their second draw over the first two league games, meaning that when Celtic take to the pitch against Aberdeen, they will have the chance to go four points clear of the Ibrox club after the first two Premiership matchdays.
Of course, the result of that game against Aberdeen is far from a foregone conclusion. We all know what the Dons can do. We saw it in the Scottish Cup final. And Celtic have their own problems at the moment, having gotten weaker over the course of the summer transfer window.
The problems at Ibrox seem to be far bigger though. Despite significant additions this summer, they do not seem to have improved, if the early results are anything to go by.
Of course, they have gotten some decent results in Europe. But Rangers managers will always be measured by what they do in the league. Russell Martin has a lot of proving to do, that is for sure. In fact, a lot of their fans are already starting to predict when he will be sacked, two weeks into the new season.
'Martin out' - Rangers fans meltdown after draw as Celtic handed chance
One Rangers fan wrote following the draw against Dundee: "Martin out before the new year. I’m calling it now."
Another added: " I said gone by November he'll be lucky to last that long."
On the other hand, it looks like some are already eyeing up a tongue-in-cheek reunion with Barry Ferguson, who had replaced Philippe Clement in the previous campaign: "If we sack Russell now, maybe we can get Barry back in time for the Europe game!"
It looks like 'Martinball' is not the most enjoyable watch either: "Another day another huge let down. Painful to watch. You can have all the possession you want but at the end of the day you need to do something with it."
Well, Celtic fans will have enjoyed that. But now, it is about getting the job done themselves. The away trip to Aberdeen is one of the toughest fixtures on the calendar and it has been made tougher by the club's lack of activity in the summer transfer window. If the Bhoys can come out of Pittodrie Stadium with three points, it would be a massive result in this title race.
