Martin O'Neill is a big fan of Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin, who he let go as a player during his first spell at the club. Goodwin came through at Celtic as a youngster but only made two league appearances before moving on to Stockport County and going on to have a long career down South, largely at League One and Two clubs before returning to Scotland.

Goodwin became a manager in 2016 and has spent time at four different clubs, ultimately taking the Dundee United job in 2023.

Goodwin now has Dundee United playing some good football, winning three of their last four, and they are up to fourth in the table. four points behind Hearts in third place.

On Wednesday night, United will rock up at Parkhead to face a Celtic side that has won all-but-one of their league games so far.

Ahead of the game, O'Neill has been speaking about Goodwin, and how he remembers letting him go as a player during his first Celtic term.

"I've got a lot of time for the manager," O'Neill said. "A lot of time for him. He was a young kid here. He didn't play because he wasn't good enough! I think I was the first one to get him all those grey hairs.

"But a lot of time for him. He's a really fine manager. How he dealt with the pitch away back in March was just brilliant! But really, a lot of time for him."

Speaking about Dundee United, he added: "Well, Dundee United, look at their history. They are a very fine football club. Yes, they've got the history to prove that."

Celtic have won every league game but for the Rangers clash, and they did beat Dundee United 4-0 away from home in the Premier Sports Cup earlier in the season, but it was early in the campaign and a cup game, so this could be a very different game, especially given the uptick in form from Goodwin's men.
