Celtic boss Martin O'Neill remains absent from preparations for Sunday's clash with Kilmarnock as he continues his recovery. O'Neill had a health scare during the week that saw him report to the hospital for a small procedure, and he was released the following day.

The 74-year-old had concerns over taking the Celtic job full-time, partly due to his age, but he ultimately decided to agree to a one-year deal.

O'Neill still absent from Celtic training

The nature of O'Neill's illness will remain private, but for now he remains absent from team preparations from Sunday's Premiership clash with Kilmarnock, which is Celtic's second of the season and their first away trip.

It's reported that Shaun Maloney has been taking training, and he will also be the man to face the media later on Friday. There is also a chance Maloney will be in charge for Sunday's clash with Kilmarnock, but it has not yet been decided whether O'Neill will travel to Ayrshire to be in the dugout for the Kilmarnock game.

That decision will likely be taken either today or tomorrow, but naturally, the priority is O'Neill's health, and he is being given the time he needs to recover from his health issue. But with Maloney being O'Neill's right-hand man, Celtic are in safe hands.

McCann sends his best

Kilmanock boss Neil McCann sent his best wishes to O'Neill during his own pre-match press conference. He said: "Obviously is there anything going on with Martin, everybody at Kilmanock, including myself, wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. I hope to see him on Sunday. I hope it's nice and calm for him.

"He never seems to get flustered too often, Martin, that's an old head on you. Whereas I'm probably running around like a stolen motor in the other dugout."
