Martin O'Neill has offered an update on Kasper Schmeichel, revealing that both the club and the player are still awaiting news on a potential surgery.

At the weekend, Schmeichel was under scrutiny for attending Manchester City vs Arsenal in the Premier League rather than Celtic's Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren. Fans thought it was disrespectful considering he is still contracted to the club, but opinions were mixed.

Now, the manager has explained what is going on with the player, as no one was entirely sure.

O'Neill said: "He is still contracted to the club, yes. There are some medical decisions to be made on whether he’s to get this operation.

"I will know more about that in the middle of the week. I will know more about that in the middle of the week. I don’t know whether the specialist wants to do this operation or not."

We now await news on whether he will go for the operation or not. If he doesn't, then his career will most certainly come to a close. It seems that way anyway, but he could still play for another club in a less competitive division.

Either way, it's curtains on his Hoops career. He is out of contract in the summer, and he will not be offered a new deal. A sad end to his time at Parkhead, but one that everyone is waiting for at this point.

Celtic on the hunt for a new goalkeeper

Since coming into the team, Viljami Sinisalo has been brilliant. He has taken on the mantle well and should be seriously considered as our regular No. 1 going into next season.

However, Celtic may see things differently, with the club already on the hunt for a goalkeeper to replace Schmeichel. Currently, they have their eye on Australia national team captain Maty Ryan, who would bring experience to the pitch. He fits the bill for goalkeepers, but it does feel a bit harsh on Sinisalo.

To be honest, it doesn't seem as though there's much he can do. He has barely put a foot wrong between the sticks, and fans seem happy enough to go ahead with him as a regular starter.

Only time will tell how things will pan out, but Sinisalo will be seriously hoping that he can keep his hands on the gloves. It'll largely be up to the next manager, and with no O'Neill replacement identified just yet, everything remains to be seen.
