Celtic are no strangers to signing veterans when they become free agents, and to be fair, it has worked out quite well for them. Aaron Mooy spent just one season at Parkhead but was an integral part of Ange Postecoglou's treble-winning team. Kasper Schmeichel has proven that he is still a top-level goalkeeper since arriving last summer. Could another such addition be made soon?
Not too long ago, Celtic were being linked with a move for Christian Eriksen of Manchester United. Now, they have been tipped to sign another one of their veteran players, who will be out of contract in the summer.
The player we are talking about is none other than Jonny Evans. The Northern Irishman made an unexpected return to Manchester United, where he came up through the ranks, in the summer of 2023.
He has ended up playing a lot more football than anybody could have reasonably expected. But this campaign has been derailed due to injury problems and the 37-year-old is expected to depart in the summer
Manchester United player tipped to make Celtic move
Teddy Sheringham appears to believe that a move to Celtic would suit Evans. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:
"Jonny Evans has been a top professional over the years. I don't think he should have left Manchester United in the first place.
"Since he came back, I don't think he expected to play as many games as he did and at his age it probably took a toll on his body.
"Can I see him at Celtic? Yeah. If he wants to carry on playing it won’t be easy at any level, but it would definitely be a lot easier to play in Scotland rather than playing for Manchester United and especially the current situation and the pressure that comes with that."
Of course, the connection with Brendan Rodgers is already there. The two worked together during their time at Leicester City. Could a reunion take place at Celtic?
It would be very similar to the club signing Kolo Toure during Rodgers' first stint at Celtic Park. Evans would not be someone that one would expect to play on a regular basis but he can still deliver on his day and would bring another veteran presence to the dressing room as well, something that could be vital if they want to progress further in the Champions League. So, the possibility should not be completely ruled out just because he is 37 years of age.
