Liam Scales just turned doubters into believers with one performance

The defender has been brilliant for the Hoops all season but often goes under the radar.

It has been a rough season for Celtic. Anyone can admit that. From playing rough possession football under Brendan Rodgers, to the awful managerial stint of Wilfried Nancy, it's a wonder that the Hoops are still in the title race, but Martin O'Neill has been a saviour for the Celts.

Since returning to Celtic, across both stints, the manager has 18 wins from 24 games in all competitions. He has managed to get his side 35 points in the league, and with the Hoops sitting on 58 points, that means his management of the squad has been responsible for over half of our points this season. It's safe to say he's a large reason why we remain in contention.

It isn't all just down to the backroom staff though, as we have had some players really perform throughout the campaign. Benjamin Nygren has been a guaranteed starter for a long time now, netting 19 times in all competitions, alongside respected names like the injured Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney.

Nygren is in for a shout when it comes to our player of the season, but one name has largely gone under the radar. Liam Scales.

The defender has been criticised in the hoops for a long time, with some people believing that he simply isn't good enough for the club, but his performances this season have been undeniably good.

He has earned so much respect from the manager that he was even trusted to captain Celtic in Sunday's Scottish Cup quarter-final against Rangers at Ibrox, an extremely hostile ground to go to, and his performance helped the Hoops to a victory after the game went all the way to penalties.

He is a total warrior in the green and white, never seems to be injured, and is a constant in this side. It serves as a reminder to never give up on players, because he was essentially written off by a majority of Celtic supporters. There were calls for him to be sold as soon as possible, but he has truly come far and deserves to play for this side.

Improving in the summer

Celtic will be looking for a new centre-back in the summer, despite his fantastic performances. It is already being reported by TEAMtalk that this is the case, and there are a few names already being looked at.

One player is former Liverpool defender Ozan Kabak, who could be brought to the club on a free transfer. This would be a massive positive for the Hoops, with the club also keen to improve up front and between the sticks, with Kasper Schmeichel set to leave in the summer.

One thing is for sure, despite all the transfer talk, though - we should not let Scales go. He is simply too good an option to have, and he has won over the respect of a lot of Celtic fans.
