Celtic have announced that Player of the Year candidate Liam Scales has signed a new contract. He will remain at the club until the summer of 2030, with the Hoops having the option to extend his deal for an additional year.

Since joining the club in 2021, Scales has made 147 appearances for the Celts. He has played a pivotal role in Celtic's defence, and continues to be a key member of the squad, even captaining the side at Ibrox earlier in the season.

He is a regular for his international side as well, earning recognition on the world stage.

Scales is over the moon about putting pen to paper. He said: "I’m delighted to commit for another few years here. It’s an amazing club, and I’ve grown to love it. I feel a real part of it now.

"I really enjoy myself here. I love my life here in Scotland, and it was good for all parties to get this done. I’m hoping that these next years will be my best.

"I feel like I’ve got the game experience now, I’ve played nearly 150 games for the club, and I’ve played for Ireland.

"It’s all coming together nicely and I just want to continue on the right trajectory over these next few years."

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is also happy about the new deal. He said: "I’m delighted for him and delighted for the club because I think Liam’s been outstanding, and since I’ve been here, he’s been absolutely terrific.

"We are a better team when he’s in, and he’s also got the ability to play left-back, and I think it’s good news for the club because he’s always there.

"I like him a lot, and I think he’s been a major player for us this season."

Fans are torn, but this is amazing

Despite fans debating the quality of player that Scales is, he has proven time and time again that he is amazing. For some reason, he just can't win over some of the support, but he doesn't need to, because the manager and the club can see his talent.

He is a rock at the back, and when he is on the teamsheet, things are good at Celtic. He is a great partner to Cameron Carter-Vickers, and when the American is available again, it'll be exciting to see them play together.

Keeping Scales until at least 2030 gives us a reliable player going forward. Whoever the next manager is next season, they'll be delighted to have the Irishman in their squad.
