With just a few days left in the winter transfer window, a lot of Celtic fans might be starting to lose hope when it comes to the club's chances of significantly strengthening Martin O'Neill's squad in time before the deadline. Throughout the month, the suggestion has been that the Hoops have been making progress, and deals are getting closer. But so far, a breakthrough has not been reached, despite links with a variety of players over the past few days.
On the other hand, it looks like there is interest in some of Celtic's players as well. But without replacements in place, the club cannot afford to let anybody leave, even if good offers arrive. At least, one would like to think so.
One player who has struggled for Celtic in recent times is Sebastian Tounekti, drawing a lot of criticism from the supporters. But if reports are accurate, he has been on the receiving end of a big-money offer from Germany.
As reported by Africafoot, Hamburg SV made an initial offer estimated at €11 million for the transfer of Tounekti, which was quickly rejected by Celtic. A second offer of around €13 million was also turned down. The Hoops do not want to part with their winger.
Late €13 million bid reportedly made for Celtic starter
Under ideal circumstances, many would Celtic fans would encourage Celtic to consider such an offer for Tounekti. But right now, the club have no real depth in that position.
Jota is out injured and is not expected to return this season. Michel-Ange Balikwisha does not look good enough to be starting games for Celtic. James Forrest is well past his prime and is a cover option at best. The only standout performer on the flanks has been Yang Hyun-jun.
Celtic have been linked with a couple of wingers in recent times. Fares Ghedjemis is viewed as their first-choice target in that position, while Demir Redzic is the backup in case a move for the Frenchman does not work out.
