Kyogo's decision to leave Celtic in order to join Rennes has quickly proven to be a mistake for the Japanese forward. The desire to play at the next World Cup for the Japan national team was believed to be the driving factor behind the move. And understandably so, as he had been often overlooked despite scoring 85 goals in his three-and-a-half seasons with the Hoops.
It is safe to say that things have not turned out as Kyogo would have envisioned when he joined Rennes. Then manager, Jorge Sampaoli, was shown the exit door just days later and was replaced by Habib Beye.
Kyogo has never seemed to be a major part of Beye's plans. In fact, the new Rennes manager appears to prefer the inexperienced Mohamed Kader Meite ahead of him. The Frenchman has played just nine senior-level games in his career so far.
As a result, Kyogo has been linked with a move away from Rennes in the summer itself, merely months after joining the club. And there has also been some speculation about a return to Celtic. But what does the player want to do?
Kyogo makes transfer decision amid Celtic return talks
As reported by Jeunes Footeux, the Japanese player's representatives are already starting to test the waters in Europe to find him a place to stay during the next transfer window. For his part, Beye doesn't seem to be counting on him for next season.
So, it remains to be seen whether a return to Celtic Park is on the cards for Kyogo or not. But it definitely looks like the player and his agents are looking to leave Rennes in the summer.
Of course, a Celtic return would surely interest the player, considering the time he enjoyed in Glasgow. But rarely have we seen the Hoops go after players who are past 30 years of age, which Kyogo is.
