The grass is not greener on the other side. That is something Jota found out after leaving Celtic in a then Scottish-record move, only to return 18 months and shed emotional tears in his first match back for the Hoops. And Kyogo seems to be finding that out as well, having left the club in the recent winter transfer window to join Rennes in France.
A dream to play at the next World Cup was given as the motivating factor behind Kyogo leaving Celtic for Rennes. That is understandable.
Kyogo is 30 years of age. The next World Cup might be his last chance to play at that level. And it is true that he had often been overlooked for Japan national team selection while at Celtic, despite his fantastic goalscoring record.
That being said, it will be even more difficult to make the Japan squad, if he spends his time sitting on. the bench at Rennes. That is exactly what he has been doing lately.
Kyogo must regret leaving Celtic amid Rennes nightmare
Kyogo was an unused substitute for Rennes in their recent 4-0 win vs Montpellier. The manager made all five changes.
Not even a late run out for Kyogo in hopes that he gets a goal and boosts his confidence. That should tell you everything you need to know about his current position in the pecking order at Rennes.
Kyogo was a regular starter at Celtic for three-and-a-half years. So, it must be difficult having to spend most of your time sitting on the bench. Unfortunately, this is becoming commong for him at Rennes.
One has to wonder whether he is starting to leave Celtic already. On the other hand, the Hoops have fortunately not had a difficult time replacing Kyogo with Daizen Maeda stepping up this season.
