Celtic star Kieran Tierney believes he and his Scotland teammates 'let themselves down' in what could well be their final game of this World Cup. Scotland were beaten 3-0 by Brazil in Miami on Wednesday night, leaving them with a minus three goal difference and three points.

That is unlikely to be enough to get the Tartan Army through to the knockout stages, with the majority of other third-place teams already ahead of them with nine groups still to play their final games.

It's likely Scotland have come up short, and in truth, it is as much about their narrow win over Haiti as it is about their heavy defeat to Brazil, given that first game was a missed opportunity.

Brazil game leaves Scotland praying

But the defeat in South Florida will feel even worse, given defensive errors were to blame for the first two goals. Scotland shot themselves in the foot, and while they did improve from there, only conceding a very well-worked Brazil goal, it was too little, too late.

Steve Clarke's men are now hoping for a near-miracle to advance, given they are already on the brink of dropping out of the best eight, especially after South Africa surprised everyone by advancing as a second place team, meaning South Korea have finished third with a better record than Scotland, adding to Bosnia and Herzegovina also finishing in third with a better record.

For now, Scotland have been left reflecting on their disappointing performance when they knew a knockout spot was on the line, and Tierney believes he and his teammates fell short of expectations.

"I think we let ourselves down a bit," the Celtic star said at full-time. "We never played the way we can play. There were a couple of goals that we give away that we don't normally give away, it wasn't like us.

"It is disappointing, it is a tough night, and going forward we just need to hope that other teams can do us favours.

"It is massively disappointing because nobody needs to say how good the opposition are. It was a tough group and if you look at the players we were up against, they only need half a chance and they are going to take it and, ultimately, they took their chances."

For what it's worth, Tierney was the best player on the pitch for Scotland after coming on at half-time, but even that wasn't enough to see Scotland score what could have been a huge goal.
