STV journalist Ronnie Charters has provided a massive update on who the next Celtic manager will be, saying that he 'knows for a fact' one notable candidate is very keen on the job.
It has been a tricky season for the Hoops. Starting the season off with Brendan Rodgers in charge, things didn't go our way, and that resulted in his sacking and the return of Martin O'Neill. After a run of games, the legend departed, being replaced by Wilfried Nancy. His disastrous tenure only lasted 33 days, after which O'Neill returned to the dugout, where he remains today.
If it weren't for him, things could look even more different. It's safe to say that Celtic would be all but out of the title race, but now, they remain firmly fighting to retain their trophy.
The summer will be even more interesting than this season, with a new manager likely to be appointed. There are rumours that O'Neill could stay for another season, but journalist Charters has confirmed that Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou wants to speak to the club.
Speaking on the STV Radio Football Show, he said: "I know for a fact he wants the Celtic job. Jens is very interested in the Celtic job.
"He would like to speak to Michael Nicholson."
Berthel Askou is a great candidate
Berthel Askou is a fantastic candidate, and it's worth it for the club to at least speak to him. His performances with Motherwell this season are not to be understated, and he has made them a fighting side. There is every chance that his team steal points from league leaders Hearts on Saturday, and they're certainly the 'best of the rest' in the Scottish Premiership outside of Celtic, Rangers, and the Jambos.
He has been a real revelation to Motherwell and continues to be. They would be gutted to lose him, so that should tell us that we have a great gaffer on our hands.
Motherwell's season compared with Celtic, Hearts and Rangers
Team | League Place | League Points | Longest Unbeaten Run |
|---|---|---|---|
Hearts | 1st | 76 | 12 |
Celtic | 2nd | 73 | 16 |
Rangers | 3rd | 69 | 7 |
Motherwell | 4th | 57 | 10 |
His side has also pulled off impressive results in the league, such as a 2-0 victory against Celtic at Fir Park back in December. Their ground has become a scary place to go, and part of that is down to how much his management has transformed the club.
You have to think that he would thrive at Celtic. He plays exciting football, he gets results, and if he's backed, we have a gem in the dugout. He could do brilliant things, so he remains a great option for the job.
