Martin O'Neill has directly addressed his future amid rumours that he could be staying in the job past this season. Since coming into the job, he has helped Celtic claw their way back into the title race. He could potentially end the season with a double to his name, and it's clear that his head is being turned by the possibility of remaining in the Parkhead dugout.
Despite taking six years away from management before returning to Celtic in October, he has done a fantastic job. Some things you never lose, and managerial talent is one of them. However, he has also admitted that he 'never enjoyed' being in the dugout, but also acknowledged that he loves it when his team win.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "I’ve said it umpteen times, I’ve never enjoyed management! I’ve been out a long time. But of course, there is an enjoyment when you win.
"It’s still exciting, seriously exciting, and it is good. I feel a sense of renaissance, coming back and working with young people, it’s really, really terrific.
"We’ll see how we stand at the end of the season, and that’s nearly upon us now."
O'Neill is excited by the job
Although O'Neill admits that management is a lot of work, it's clear that he is excited by the prospect of working with younger players and winning games. The comments don't seem like someone who is ready to be done with it for good, so is there a chance that he could be staying on?
At this point, you would've expected us to have heard more news about the next permanent appointment, but we haven't. We know that Jens Berthel Askou is being considered, with Robbie Keane also on the cards, but the truth is that no one really knows for certain.
Last month, he hinted that he could be staying at Celtic past this season as he admitted that he will be taking a look at players who are set to return at the start of the next campaign. However, he could be in a different role, with some talk over him taking up a higher job at Parkhead.
No matter what happens, it would be brilliant to have O'Neill around the club in some capacity. Some fans don't want to see him stay as manager, and you can understand why, but he does bring experience, an eye for a good player, and a love for Celtic that can't be understated.
