Celtic need to make a statement signing or two this summer. So far, the highest transfer fee that they have paid is the £1.5 million to bring Benjamin Nygren to Parkhead. Now, there is no doubt that he is a phenomenal talent and has been very impressive in pre-season. But at some point, the Hoops need to show a bit of ambition in the market as well.

One name they have been quite heavily linked with over the past few weeks is that of Jakob Breum. The Go Ahead Eagles winger was a standout in Dutch football last season.

He scored 10 goals and provided 5 assists in 26 Eredivisie appearances in the previous campaign. And that has brought the 21-year-old on the radar of clubs like Celtic, who are trying to sign the youngster capable of playing on both wings and in the number 10 role as well.

If Celtic are able to sign Breum, it would have to be considered a major coup for the club. Until now, they have not been successful. In fact, the Hoops have made three failed bids for him, Breum's latest comments will offer them some hope that a move is possible this summer though.

Breum has confirmed that he is open to the next step in his career now and is not particular about any leagues, although a move will depend on the offers that come in. As reported by CeltsAreHere, he told TV2:

"I’m very open to the next step. It all depends on what offers come in.

“It’s not like I have certain leagues that I just have to go to. But of course I’m aiming for as high a level as possible because it’s the dream to play against the very best."

Of course, that does not mean that he is aiming for a move to Celtic. But it does open up the window to a move this summer, which is the best that the Hoops can hope for right now.

Celtic will need to loosen their purse strings and make a proper move to sign Breum though. So far, their bids have been far below what his club are looking for. Their third offer was believed to be in the region of £3 million while Go Ahead Eagles want around ̇€7.5 million or about £6.5 million in order to part ways with the Danish youth international.
