Celtic have had to deal with a lot of injury problems already this season. That has not helped them on the pitch, as the Hoops have struggled for form. Of course, not all of it is down to fitness issues. One cannot make the mistake of overlooking the terrible summer transfer window and the drop-off in performances of some key players.

That being said, having the strongest team available would help Celtic for sure. And it looks like one of their starters is closing in on a return to fitness earlier than expected.

Celtic have been decent enough defensively this season, especially in domestic competitions. There is no doubt that Alistair Johnston returning to fitness would be a boost for Brendan Rodgers' side though, as they look to rediscover their best form.

There have already been reports of Johnston returning to training. And now, the good news has been confirmed by Canadian national team manager Jesse Marsch. As reported by The Scottish Sun, he said:

"Alistair is already starting to get on the pitch and do some individual work.

“And that should bode well for him potentially making an early return and being available for our games in November."

Johnston has been a key player for Celtic throughout his time at Parkhead, having arrived in early 2023 to replace Josip Juranovic. He was a starter under the management of Ange Postecoglou from the get-go and has held on to that spot since the appointment of Rodgers as well.

It is worth mentioning that Colby Donovan has done an admirable job since being brought into the first-team picture and deserves a ton of credit. He is someone who might have a future in the starting XI, although not immediately. Anthony Ralston is back to fitness as well, so Rodgers does have options available at right-back at the moment, and it is only going to get better with Johnston closing in on his comeback to the pitch.

Of course, the same cannot be said about several other positions on the pitch, where Celtic have very little depth. Hopefully, additions will be made there in the upcoming January transfer window.
