History suggests Celtic taking the St Mirren game as a given is not worth the risk

Why Celtic cannot take St Mirren lightly ahead of Sunday's Scottish Cup semi-final

On the face of it, Celtic are surely overwhelming favourites to win the Scottish Cup from here. Last month, the Hoops ousted Rangers on penalties on a heated afternoon at Ibrox, with Tomáš Čvančara converting the decisive spot-kick. So now, down to the final four, Dunfermline will face Falkirk on Saturday lunchtime, with the Celts up against St Mirren a day later. Thus, most would expect them to go on and picked up a record-extending 43rd Scottish Cup, but do no write off the Saints.

First and foremost, St Mirren beat Celtic 3-1 at Hampden just 125 days ago in the League Cup Final, this coming during Wilfried Nancy's infamous 33-day tenure, so will certainly believe a repeat is possible. Since then, the Buddies have lost their manager Stephen Robinson to Aberdeen and are currently battling against Premiership relegation, a mere two points above Kilmarnock in the relegation play-off spot. Nevertheless, they have proved stubborn opponents for Celtic on multiple occasions.

Earlier in the campaign, the Hoops required sublime late strikes from Luke McCowan and then Callum McGregor to snatch wins over the Saints. They completed a trio of 1-0 Premiership victories as recently as Saturday, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the match-winner at Parkhead. A year ago, the Celts steamrollered St Johnstone 5-0 at the semi-final stage, a lot has changed in the subsequent 364 days, and a repeat scoreline appears very unlikely.

So, as the Celtic support descend on Hampden this Sunday, they may do so fearing another surprise defeat at the national stadium.

  • 18 March 2012. League Cup Final: Celtic 0-1 Kilmarnock.
  • 10 April 2010. Scottish Cup semi-final: Celtic 0-2 Ross County.

Not so long ago, Celtic were simply unbeatable at Hampden. They won 18 consecutive matches at the national stadium, picking up a quadruple treble during this time frame, a sequence ended by Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Rangers four years ago. In the last 12 months, the Celts have been beaten in the Scottish Cup Final by Aberdeen on penalties and December's aforementioned League Cup Final, with their sense of inevitability and invincibility having very much subsided.

During his first stint as manager, Martin O'Neill won the Scottish Cup on three occasions, including defeating Dunfermline in the 2004 final, with a repeat very much a possibility. Before then though, despite the fact they are third bottom of the table and without a manager, St Mirren cannot be taken lightly.
