Celtic might look to sign another striker this summer. That was probably already a position of need after the departure of Kyogo in the winter. Jota also picked up a long-term injury recently that is set to keep him out for six to nine months. That has seen Daizen Maeda move back to the left flank and further decrease options up top.
Interestingly, Kyogo has been linked with a return to Parkhead after his Rennes move has proved to be a failure. But he is not the only former Celtic striker who might be eyeing a comeback.
Giorgos Giakoumakis joined Celtic in the same summer as Kyogo. After a slow start, he came into his own in the second half of the season and ended the campaign as the Scottish Premiership top scorer. But that was not enough to earn him a regular starting spot and he would leave in early 2023, joining Atlanta United.
Giakoumakis had a brief but successful spell at Atlanta United. He then joined Cruz Azul. But the Greek international has admitted that he is interested in a Celtic return. As reported by the Daily Record, he said:
"I would love to play for Celtic again. I don't know if that's a utopia or if it could happen again - but who wouldn't?
"Even if you don't know what it feels like to be there, when you've already been there, you know exactly what it means.
"So if someone played for Celtic and he was successful and you ask him a couple of years after, 'Would you play again for Celtic?' and he tells you no, he's a stupid guy. He's so dumb.
"So, yeah, I would love, love, love to wear this jersey again. I don't know if this circle is done for me, but, yeah, that's my truth."
Giorgos Giakoumakis ready to make blockbuster Celtic return
There is no doubt that Giakoumakis is a fantastic striker. But at 30 years of age, it is hard to imagine that Celtic would be open to the idea of spending a big transfer fee to bring him back.
Of course, if at some point, Giakoumakis becomes available as a free agent, then the move could become possible. After all, the Hoops have signed veteran free agents in recent years.
Aaron Mooy and Kasper Schmeichel have worked out quite well for the club. Could Giakoumakis join that list one day?
