Celtic star Callum McGregor may not be heading to Saudi Arabia with Brendan Rodgers, but he could go there to join up with another former manager.

McGregor has been linked with a move to link up with Rodgers for some time, and he joined the Northern Irishman son's agency recently, sparking fresh speculation. But Rodgers' Saudi side Al-Qadsiah have now filled up their foreign player allowance, meaning a deal is no longer possible, at least not unless a sale is made.

Fresh links between Mcgregor and Saudi Arabia

According to 365Scores, Al-Nassr could now make a move for McGregor, with former Celtic boss Angie Postecoglou having taken the job there, signing up to manage Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix and co.

At 33 years of age, McGregor might be tempted by such a move, especially given it could come with a significant payday. He is also a fan of Postecoglou's, having said when the Australian left the club: “It has been great to work with the gaffer over the past two seasons and to achieve the success that we have, especially achieving yet another Treble at the weekend.

“In fact, to win five out of six domestic trophies is a tremendous achievement and that is testament to the real focus and relentlessness of the manager, the players and our whole backroom team who have all worked so hard."

Postecoglou a huge fan of McGregor's

Meanwhile, Postecoglou said of McGregor back in 2023: “He is [a serial winner] and it’s credit to him and his family. When you’re part of a winning team it gives you belief and confidence that you can do it again.

“But to do it as a leader adds an extra dimension. He’s followed a fantastic skipper in Scott Brown and saw how he dealt with success, which is really important. It’s not just about attaining success, it’s what you do when you have it.

“You can see with Callum he’s still very measured in the way he embraces what comes his way. He understands that his role in it is to be the leader of a collective effort and never get too far ahead of himself or allow the group to get too far ahead of themselves.

“The most pleasing thing for me is that I know he’ll come back in here today – I said when he played his 400th game that he trains every day like he’s got something to prove – and I’ve got no doubt he’ll come in and do that today. That’s the hallmark of an outstanding leader.”

Convincing McGregor to leave Celtic is never going to be an easy thing to do, and even big money might not be enought to do it. But from those comments, you would have to say that if anyone has a chance of convincing him, it may be Postecoglou.
