It looks like, after facing a couple of rejections from Steven Gerrard and Danny Rohl, the Rangers have found their next manager. The Ibrox job is not the most attractive one at the moment as nobody has really been able to get them past Celtic, which has resulted in the club sacking four managers in the last four seasons. Are they aiming for some stability this time around or is the same thing going to happen a fifth time, if it does not work out?
Well, it looks like the Rangers are closing in on the appointment that most of their fans wanted when it became clear that Gerrard was not going to return to Ibrox. A familiar face looks set for his return to Ibrox.
As reported by The Rangers Review, Rangers are working to finalise a deal to appoint Kevin Muscat as their new head coach. They are working on the personal terms and a seven-figure compensation package.
Muscat is expected to remain in China until the end of the season there, which is November 22, even if he ends up landing the Rangers job, which is looking very likely at this point. And the Ibrox club would bring in an interim manager until then.
'Finalise a deal' - Rangers manager news drops, Celtic fans react
So, it looks like Muscat is finally going to bring an end to the Rangers' managerial search. It appears that the Ibrox fans are behind this idea as well, as they seem convinced that Muscat is the man to turn things around for them.
If Ange Postecoglou could at Celtic why can't his former number 2 do at Ibrox, right? Well, it does not always work like that. So, let's just wait and watch.
Admittedly, Muscat has enjoyed a fantastic career managing in Asia and Australia, winning league titles with Melbourne Victory, Yokohama F. Marinos and Shanghai Port. But he is not exactly untested in Europe either.
The first time around, he failed that test quite convincingly though. In 14 games in charge of Sint-Truiden, he only managed two wins before being sacked. And that is a team that has been in the Belgian top flight for a decade straight now.
Interestingly, the season they had Muscat as their manager proved to be their worst one over the past decade. So, bringing him in would not be the automatic success that some Rangers fans seem to be expecting owing to his record in Japan, China and Australia.
