It has happened again. For the fourth straight season, the Rangers have sacked their manager. Russell Martin has joined Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Mick Beale and Philippe Clement in heading out the exit door. At least there were signs of hope under the previous three. The 49ers era's first appointment turned out to be a complete failure. As things stand, they are 9 points behind Celtic and 11 behind Hearts in the league title race.
Rangers will be hoping for a new manager bounce. And considering how shaky Celtic have been this season, they will be hoping that there is still time to catch up with the Hoops.
Of course, their record when it comes to making managerial appointments is not great. But when almost every one of them ends up flopping, at some point, you need to look at other factors which might be preventing managers from tasting success at Parkhead.
Who will be the next Rangers manager? Steven Gerrard has been installed as the early favourite for the job, with Sean Dyche not far behind him. Others like Kevin Muscat, Derek McInnes and Danny Rohl have been suggested to be in the mix as well.
Favourite named for Rangers job as they look to catch Celtic
Gerrard won the league title with the Rangers back in the 20/21 campaign. He would leave the following season to join Aston Villa, which proved to be a failed spell. That was followed by an underwhelming spell at Al-Ettifaq.
Gerrard has been without a club since earlier this year and that means he is free to take up that Rangers job. And it is not hard to see why both parties might be interested.
For Gerrard, this is a chance to rebuild his managerial reputation, after two failed spells, at a club he knows. For the Rangers, it is about going back to the only thing that has worked at Ibrox.
That being said, in his three-plus years at Ibrox, Gerrard only won one title. Will he be shown the same patience this time around? That does not feel like the case, to be very honest.
Many Celtic fans might like the idea of Gerrard returning as well. At the end of the day, he was the one who stopped 10IAR and Hoops supporters would not want that to be his final chapter in Scottish football. So, this might be a chance to rewrite that story a bit.
