The Russell Martin chapter in the Rangers' history is over. It only lasted 123 days, a record low for the Ibrox side. Even a few weeks back, there had been suggestions that the board were completely behind their summer appointment. But the draw against Falkirk proved to be his last one in charge as his departure was announced later that evening. Celtic boss, Brendan Rodgers, has managed to outlast another rival manager during his time in Glasgow.

Now, it remains to be seen who the Rangers end up appointing. Will they finally go back to Steven Gerrard, who has been without a club since earlier in the year, in hopes of recreating the run that won them one trophy in three-plus years? Or will they choose someone new?

The Rangers job is certainly not an attractive one at the moment. After all, they have sacked a manager for the fourth consecutive season, and nobody seems to be getting it right. At some point, one has to question other issues at the club that might be causing these failures.

Chris Sutton had a tongue-in-cheek response to the sacking of Martin by the Rangers. He wrote:

"My sources are saying Boydy to come to Rangers rescue…"

It remains to be seen what the Rangers will end up doing. Celtic fans will be hoping that they do not end up making a decent appointment this time around.

But even if they do, there will be question marks over its success. At the end of the day, when one manager after another fails, it is generally not down to 'just' the coaching.

Some of their fans have been calling for Frank Lampard's appointment after his success in the Championship. But why would the Chelsea legend leave what's working for something that is almost guaranteed not to do so?
