Christian Eriksen is one of the unlikeliest players to be linked with Celtic in recent years. The club have signed a few high-profile names over the past few seasons though. Joe Hart spent three good campaigns playing for the Hoops before retiring. Kasper Schmeichel, the Manchester United midfielder's Danish international teammate, arrived at Parkhead in the summer.
So, ruling out the possibility of Eriksen joining Celtic would be a bit of a mistake. And it looks like he does not have a long-term future with Manchester United anyway.
As tweeted by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United and Eriksen are still expected to part ways at the end of the season. No negotiations are taking place over a new deal. While Ruben Amorim’s opinion will also be considered, the expectation is for the Danish midfielder to leave.
At 32 years of age, one would think that Eriksen would have at least a few good years left in the tank. So, could a move to Celtic actually be on the cards?
Fabrizio Romano confirms Christian Eriksen news amid Celtic links
Of course, it all depends on what Eriksen is looking for in the twilight years of his career. If he wants one last big contract, Celtic would not be the club to join. That is just the reality of the situation.
But if he wants to finish his career playing Champions League football and in front of arguably the best fanbase in world football while competing consistently for trophies, Celtic is the place to be. That would be his choice to make.
As for Celtic, they have to carefully consider whether they even need Eriksen at this point. The Hoops' midfield department is pretty stacked at the moment. They have players like Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Paulo Bernardo already.
