After a long-running and twisty saga, it looks like the Greg Taylor contract story might be coming to an end soon. And it is an ending that not many had predicted. For the longest time, it had looked like the Scottish left-back's departure was inevitable. He had not extended his deal while Celtic had already agreed a pre-contract to bring back Kieran Tierney of Arsenal in the summer.
There have been a few twists in this tale since then though. The most major one was the sacking of Fabio Cannavaro as Dinamo Zagreb manager. The Croatian club was believed to be Taylor's most likely destination in the summer.
At Celtic, Jeffrey Schlupp's form dipped and Taylor found himself back in the starting XI against Kilmarnock. He took that opportunity with both hands, putting in an excellent performance. Brendan Rodgers had always seemed keen on keeping the left-back and that display might have been the last thing he needed to convince the club to push for an extension.
If recent rumours are anything to go by, then that extension is all but done. As reported by The Fitbaw Gospel, both parties are now happy with the offer on the table and there are just a few minor details still to be ironed out. Taylor has agreed terms on a three-year extension and will remain at Parkhead to compete for a place with Tierney next season.
Details emerge as Greg Taylor 'agrees' new three-year deal to stay at Celtic
This might be the best step for both parties involved. Yes, Taylor might not be the first-choice left-back next season, when Kieran Tierney is available. But considering the Arsenal man's injury-prone history, the Hoops will surely look to manage his game time and give him considerable rest.
So, Taylor could end up getting a decent amount of game time, whether it be starting when Tierney is unavailable or rested, or coming on as a substitute. Let's see how that situation plays out.
As for Celtic, keeping someone like Taylor could be vital. He knows the system well, having played two seasons under the management of Rodgers. On top of that, he has been at the club since 2019 and is believed to be a dressing room leader. So, it would not be ideal to lose a presence like that. Hopefully, the talk of an extension are true and he ends up staying with the champions of Scotland.
