Let's paint the full picture here. When it comes to the domestic game, Celtic have never been more successful than they have been over the past decade and a half. Nobody can deny that. That deserves its fair share of credit and recognition. But on the other hand, one cannot also ignore the lack of ambition that has been shown by the club when it comes to improving as a whole and making an impact at the European level.
That was very clear this summer. Last season, Brendan Rodgers did a tremendous job to take them past the first phase of the Champions League in the first time in over a decade and then gave Bayern Munich a run for their money, losing 3-2 on aggregate and drawing away at the Allianz Arena.
So, this summer transfer window could have been the perfect opportunity for Celtic to take the next step forward by bringing in some quality players and trying to strengthen the squad further. Instead, they ended up allowing the team to deteriorate. And the results were immediately clear, as they failed to make it into the Champions League and have been mediocre in the league as well, and are trailing Hearts.
Naturally, the fans are not happy and they want changes at the club. One of them is the departure of Dermot Desmond and it has been suggested that there is a world where that could happen.
Dermot Desmond ready to quit Celtic but only on one condition
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Alan Brazil said on talkSPORT:
"I think, from what I gather, you don’t know what goes on at football clubs…
“But I think, that Dermot Desmond – who’s been brilliant for Celtic – I think if the right price comes, he’s gone.
“Because Dermot’s getting older now, he’s got loads of money, heaps of money. He’s the one who coaxed Martin to coming back."
To be honest, Desmond has probably never been less popular than he is right now with Celtic fans. The lack of ambition has not gone down well with the supporters, and his reaction to Rodgers' exit and then Ross Desmond's comments at the AGM have not helped matters. At 75 years of age, it might be time for him to walk away.
Let's see if the suggestion turns out to be on the mark or not. But it does feel like it is time for a change at Celtic.
