Rangers are looking to find a manager capable of helping them compete with Celtic. That is something nobody has been able to do on a consistent basis. As a result, over the last four seasons, the Ibrox club have had five managers in place. They cannot afford to continue on this path and will need to find a long-term solution.
One of the names that had been linked with the Rangers job recently is Davide Ancelotti. But then, it looked like he had passed on the chance and was ready to help his father, as he became the Brazil national team's manager.
Now, the situation has taken an unexpected twist though. Davide was not present as Carlo Ancelotti was unveiled as the Brazil national team's new manager.
The former Real Madrid and AC Milan boss has also gone on to confirm that Davide is in negotiations with a European team, without naming the side. As reported by BBC, the new Selecao manager said:
"Davide is currently in negotiations with a European team.
"I don't think it's right for him to come with me. If he goes to a club, I wish him the best. And if not, he can come back to us at any time."
Davide Ancelotti to Rangers twist Celtic fans didn't see coming
Of course, the Rangers were not named. But there is a strong possibility that it might be them, considering Davide has not been heavily linked with another team in recent weeks.
Most believed that the Ancelotti to Rangers story was already in the rearview mirror. But out of nowhere, it looks like it is still very much on the cards.
He has some top-level experience coaching at clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton. But the fact of the matter is that he has always worked in his father's team. Going out and managing a team on his own will be a completely different thing.
There are a lot of good coaches, who struggle when they become managers. That is something the Rangers should know better than most. Mick Beale was considered a phenomenal coach while at Rangers and the mastermind behind their league win. But when he returned as manager a few years later, it turned out to be a completely different story.
So, if the Rangers end up appointing Ancelotti, it is not something that would worry Celtic. They have Brendan Rodgers in the dugout and he has seen his fair share of managers come and go through the Ibrox revolving door.
