Chris Sutton unconvinced by big-money Celtic signing
Not too long ago, Celtic were absolutely flying. They were scoring for fun and looked impenetrable at the back. It does not take long for things to change in football though. The Hoops have won, lost and drawn one each of their previous three games across all competitions. In none of those performances have they looked convincing.
One thing that has been constant in all three of those matches is the absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers. The American defender is dealing with an injury that has kept him out of action in recent weeks.
Injuries have unfortunately been a constant problem for Carter-Vickers in recent years. Celtic do not have anyone else even close to his level in defence though. As a result, they often look shaky at the back when the United States international is not playing.
Auston Trusty was signed from Sheffield United for a transfer fee believed to be around £6 million this summer. Some had predicted that he would have an easy time up in Scotland. But so far, he has not put a single standout performance in a Celtic jersey.
Chris Sutton unconvinced by big-money Celtic signing
Chris Sutton said while talking on Sky Sports Scotland:
"I think there are concerns mainly because Cameron Carter-Vickers, their rock, the best defender at the club, hasn’t been there for a while.
“So, every time Celtic take the field and he’s not playing, I worry. They’re not the same defensively.
“Trusty has come in, big shoes to fill, I’m not so sure at this moment in time he’s filled them adequately."
Trusty needs to be careful because chances are at a premium at clubs like Celtic, Yuki Kobayashi failed to impress in his first few appearances for the Hoops and never got back into the team again. The same could happen to the American as well, who has not made the most of his opportunities so far.
That being said, it is worth pointing out that Trusty was brought in to partner with Carrter-Vickers in the backline, not take his place. So, we will need to see that combination at least a few times before coming to any final conclusions about the former Arsenal and Sheffield United man.
