You best understand the importance of great players in their absence. That is certainly proving to be the case with Cameron Carter-Vickers. A Celtic side, that was cruising past opponents earlier in the seasons, suddenly look shaky at the back without their rock at the back. Their latest defensive gaffe came against Aberdeen, as they could not protect a two-goal lead and ended up drawing 2-2.

Auston Trusty, who was signed for a transfer fee around £6 million on deadline day from Sheffield United, has yet to put in a convincing performance in a Celtic shirt. Carter-Vickers' return cannot come soon enough.

Their next match is against Atalanta. After losing 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund, Celtic need a bounce back result in the Champions League.

Unfortunately, it remains unclear whether Carter-Vickers will feature on the night or not. As reported by the Daily Record, when asked if the American international is likely to return for Wednesday, Rodgers would only say:

"I will see tomorrow."

That is not a comment that will fill Celtic fans with confidence when it comes to Carter-Vickers' status for the game against Atalanta. Ange Postecoglou would often hold cards close to his chest and play mind games with the opposition. Rodgers is much more straightforward when it comes to things like this.

So, while the chances of Carter-Vickers returning for this weekend have not been ruled out, do not hold your breath. Of course, if he does miss the game against Atalanta, it would be another headache for the club.

Atalanta are a solid team, especially going forward. On the other hand, Celtic have struggled defensively in the absence of Carter-Vickers. It would also be interesting to see if they adjust their style of football after conceding seven goals against Borussia Dortmund.
