Chris Sutton has had his say on the Premier League interest in Celtic's top scorer, Benjamin Nygren. The Swede will be in high demand in the summer after his impressive debut campaign with the Hoops. Interest is already growing, and it'll be a nerve-racking time for Celtic fans at the end of the campaign.
Sutton has been confused by Nygren this season, labelling him Scotland's 'strangest player'. He said: "Nygren is an enigma, isn’t he? He’s the strangest player in Scottish football. You look at his goals record, and it’s amazing.
"He has this tremendous instinct for goals. But actually, what you want from him in that midfield is to control games. I just don’t think he has the legs. I don’t know what his best position is. I think that’s something that has been levelled at him throughout his career."
Despite Sutton's assessment, he has still performed well. With 19 goals for the season, you can't argue with the statistics, but now, Sutton isn't convinced the player is Premier League-ready.
Sutton said on The Warm Up: "[The Premier League interest], that’s where I would be sceptical. I don’t think he has the dynamism. He has a wonderful instinct for his movement in the box and where it’s going to land— a nice left foot and a good finisher. I am not so sure, just personally, I would have liked to have played with him."
Will the Premier League interest turn real?
Whether the Premier League interest in Nygren will turn real is yet to be seen. Sutton could be spot on with his assessment, despite it seeming harsh. We'll just have to wait and see.
For most Celtic fans though, they'll be hoping that the Swede has another season or two left in Glasgow. He has been one of the few bright spots of a struggling team this season, and although he has been hit or miss sometimes, you have to respect the performances that he's putting in.
One thing everyone can agree on is that he does leave the midfield weak sometimes. Because he pushes up more, it leaves the two remaining central players struggling to keep the opposition at bay, often putting the team under more pressure than they should be.
Of course, he isn't solely responsible for the problems in the middle of the park though. The whole team hasn't been great. He is certainly deserving of another season at Parkhead. Hopefully, we'll get one from him.
