Celtic lost their second-straight Glasgow Derby. That is what the headlines will read coming out of this weekend. Even more worryingly, they did so against a Rangers team that entered the game 16 points behind them. So, Brendan Rodgers needs to go back to the drawing board and figure out what is going wrong.
Yes, this result won't end up having much of an impact on the title race. But in the future, if the gap is not this significant, such losses would have a major negative effect on Celtic.
At the same time, one cannot overlook the Rangers' overreaction to the result either. Every Glasgow Derby is important but they cannot forget that they are still 13 points behind Celtic in the league with just eight games left to be played in the Premiership.
Second is considered last in Glasgow. But you would think that judging from the celebrations at Celtic Park yesterday.
Chris Sutton mocks what Rangers fans did at Celtic Park
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Chris Sutton said after the game on BBC 606:
"I’ve got to say, over-celebrating at the end. I wouldn’t have done that, Rob. There’s no way I would have milked it like that.
“These were the same fans who were booing the Rangers. They were booing the Rangers players off the pitch a couple of weeks ago. Now they are clapping and dancing.
“Come on."
Well, football is a game of short memories, especially these days. So, the reaction to the result at Celtic Park should not come as a surprise to anybody.
One can only hope that it does end up serving as a wake-up call for Celtic. We have seen similar situations before. In the 19/20 season, the Hoops won the treble as well. But it was clear that the gap between them and the Rangers was starting to close down on the pitch. And we all know how the 20/21 campaign turned out. Nobody wants to see a repeat of that.
The summer transfer window will be a great opportunity for Celtic to strengthen their squad. Hopefully, they make the most of it.
