It would be pretty safe to say that things are not rosy at Celtic at the moment. All the good work of Martin O'Neill has been undone by Wilfried Nancy within the space of a couple of weeks. The timing was always risky and the club have paid the price for not sticking with the Northern Irishman until the Scottish League Cup final.
Nancy has all four of his games in charge so far. That includes the Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren. The couple of losses in the league have also allowed the Rangers to come within three points of Celtic despite the terrible Russell Martin run from earlier in the campaign, when things had looked unsalvageable at Ibrox. Now, they might be favourites to win the Premiership.
A lot might come down to how long the Celtic board are willing to stick with Nancy for. It is pretty clear that they are not keen to sack him so quickly and admit that the appointment was a mistake on their part.
At the same time, at some point, common sense will need to prevail. If Celtic lose again at the weekend, will it be the final straw? Or will the club back Nancy at least until the January transfer window in hopes that new signings will turn things around for them?
Chris Sutton makes worrying Wilfried Nancy claim every Celtic fan is thinking
What many Celtic fans are worried about is that the club could end up wasting the January transfer window signing players for Nancy, only for their system to fail afterwards as well. As Chris Sutton wrote in his column in the Daily Record:
"How much damage could it do to the season if action is not taken? People talk about getting his own signings in, but has Nancy shown enough that he can be trusted with the January transfer window? Will he even last until the window opens?"
Unfortunately, this is a genuine concern for Celtic right now. This season depends on how things will work out for Nancy at the club.
So far, he has shown no signs that he is capable of getting results. He has lost all four games and in a convincing fashion as well. There have been sparks of promise here and there but that is not enough for a club like Celtic. If you don't win, you can only last so long in this job.
