Chris Sutton explains why he is 'worried' about Celtic this season

Chris Sutton said he is getting bored of Celtic as their rather forgettable summer rumbles on. The bhoys are still searching for their first signing, and they didn't manage to officially appoint Martin O'Neill's backroom staff until Friday.

It took long enought o appoint O'Neill, which the veteran boss has shouldered the blame for, but everything Celtic have done so far this summer has felt like a struggle. Pair that with the fact not a single signing has been made prior to the start of pre-season and you have all the ingredients for an angry fanbase.

Celtic might get away with it in normal circumstances, too, but this comes after a summer of poor recruitment last year that paved the way for a very disappointing start to the season. O'Neill and the Bhoys ended up pulling the title win out of the bag in the end, but the veteran boss made it clear he wanted a more organised approach this summer.

That has not happened yet, and frustrations are growing rapidly around Parkhead.

Sutton dubs Celtic 'boring'

Former Celtic striker Sutton has been vocal with his criticism of the Bhoys chiefs of late, and he has added to that criticism while speaking on the Warm-Up.

“I’m like every other Celtic fan in the world. I keep waking up and thinking it’s going to be Christmas Day, and it’s Groundhog Day," the former striker began.

“And nothing happens. Actually, it’s boring. Really boring talking about Celtic. It’s not only boring — it’s concerning. It’s really worrying.

“Let’s just wait and see. Maybe there’s this masterplan; something going on behind the scenes where Celtic are going to explode into life, sign all these top quality players, get off to a flier into the Champions League, and keep a hold of Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels and Alistair Johnston…

But no, I think the uncertainty… It’s just a mess, isn’t it? It’s just a mess. I don’t understand what’s going on. It’s last summer: prepare to fail, fail to prepare. It happened, and Celtic scrambled and got the double, brilliant. Genuinely brilliant, really exciting, the way the season ended.

“But it’s like there isn’t a plan. Who’s making the decisions? Well, we’ve all got a good idea who’s making the big calls, but nothing is getting done. So it actually is boring talking about Celtic.”

Ultimately, Sutton's views may sound pointed, but they rather accurately describe the feelings of most of a Hoops persuasion currently. After last summer, fans wanted to see a proactive approach, especially given the likelihood that a couple of key players will leave the club this summer.

But nothing has been done in anticipation of that, and there hasn't even been any communication over the futures of Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who are out of contract this week.

The communication has been dire, and the execution of a recruitment strategy has been non-existent. There is just a month to go until the start of the new season, and it feels as though Celtic are going to end up panic-buying during July.
